Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to charge an electric vehicle?

Less than you think! The average domestic electricity rate is about 14p per kWh, so it adds up to around £11.20 to charge an electric car with 80kW engine – much cheaper than a tank of petrol.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

That all depends on the type of charger you have, which can either be slow, fast or rapid.

Slow is rated at 3-6kW and usually will need to be used overnight to reach full charge. Fast is rated at either 7kW or 22kW, and takes between two to five hours for a full charge. Rapid is rated at 50kW, and takes only 40 minutes for an 80% charge.

What grants are available for electric vehicles?

You can get substantial discounts on brand-new low emission vehicles via a government grant. The maximum grant available for all-electric cars is £3,000 and the amount of the grant will depend on which category the vehicle is in. You can find a list of eligible vehicles here
